The prompt arrival of soldiers and vigilance group members after receiving distress calls saved some residents of a community in Sokoto State from being killed and abducted during an attack by some bandits.
The soldiers and vigilantes were said to have engaged the marauders in a gun duel, killing two of them and arresting three others.
According to a competent source close to the military, the incident occurred on Tuesday night at Kwargaba community in Wurno Local Government Area of Sokoto State when the bandits, riding motorcycles, invaded the community in order to abduct residents.
However, while the attack was about to take place, distress calls were made to soldiers and vigilantes stationed at Marnina, a neighbouring community and the operatives raced to the scene.
On sighting the soldiers and vigilantes, the bandits were said to have opened fire and the operatives engaged them in a shootout, leading to the death of two of the bandits and arrest of three of them while others reportedly escaped.
States in the Northern part of the country, especially the North-West have been under attacks by bandits and terrorists who raid communities, kill residents, abduct others and set houses ablaze.
The military and the governments have put in place various security measures to tackle the twin problems, but this has not deterred them from unleashing violence on residents.
