Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), ending weeks of speculation about his political future.
Governor Diri announced his decision on Wednesday during a brief session with members of the State Executive Council at the Government House in Yenagoa. The governor, however, did not disclose the political party he intends to join.
His exit from the PDP was immediately endorsed by 23 members of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, led by the Speaker, giving him firm legislative backing.
Diri’s defection came barely 24 hours after his Enugu State counterpart, Governor Peter Mbah, also dumped the PDP for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), sparking renewed concerns about a wave of defections hitting the main opposition party.
Political observers in Bayelsa say the governor’s move could reshape the state’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 elections, especially if he aligns with a national party bloc.
As at press time, neither Governor Diri nor his media aides have confirmed whether he will be joining the APC or another political platform. The PDP leadership has also yet to issue an official reaction to the development.
More to come later…
