There was confusion in the Challenge area of Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, on Thursday morning as some gunmen suspected to be kidnappers abducted a 12-year-old female student of a private secondary school.
The student was abducted and bundled into a car at the junction close to her school (names withheld) after the hoodlums shot into the air. She was then taken to an unknown destination.
An eyewitness told Impact Nigeria News Online on Thursday afternoon that after shooting into the air, the four gunmen, who covered their faces, also shot one of the tyres of the vehicles the girl alighted from.
The eyewitness added that after abducting the girl, their vehicle headed towards the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway through the Falana/Ayefele end of Challenge.
Confirming the incident, the state police command said the abduction took place around 7:30 a.m. at a junction leading to her school premises after the girl alighted from a vehicle.
The command disclosed that after receiving a distress call, detectives were immediately deployed to the scene for preliminary assessment and fact-finding.
The command added that eyewitnesses at the scene gave information that serve as valuable leads in the ongoing investigations.
“The parents of the victim have been contacted and are in close contact with the police as efforts continue to ensure the safe rescue of the child,” the command said.
