A Magistrate Court sitting in Bolade, Oshodi, has granted bail to Mr. Kayode Otitoju, a 70-year-old man arrested for allegedly vandalising a Lagos State infrastructure project in Lekki Phase 1.
Arraigned on Monday, June 16, 2025, Otitoju faced a two-count charge related to the destruction of an ongoing fence construction along the canal setback—part of the state’s efforts to combat flooding and enforce environmental compliance. He pleaded not guilty.
Defence counsel Oluwaseun Ettu, Esq., successfully applied for bail on lenient terms, citing the defendant’s age. The court set bail at ₦200,000, with one surety, three years of tax receipts, and address verification required for release.
The Magistrate’s decision was seen as a balance between enforcing legal accountability and recognizing the accused’s age and vulnerability. As of the time of reporting, Otitoju remained in custody pending fulfillment of bail conditions.
Authorities have reiterated a zero-tolerance stance on vandalism of public infrastructure, labelling such acts as sabotage against state-led efforts to build environmental resilience and improve urban aesthetics.
The canal setback project where the incident occurred is part of a broader initiative to protect flood-prone areas in Lagos. While state officials declined to comment, citing the ongoing judicial process, the case has drawn public attention due to its implications for civic responsibility, infrastructure protection, and the rule of law.
The trial is scheduled to begin on July 25, 2025.
