The Edo State Police Command is currently on the trail of a woman who raised a false alarm on abduction of some students in Benin City, the state capital.
The woman, known on social media as ‘Azawoman,’ alleged that students of Green Park Academy, Aduwawa, Benin City, were kidnapped, a false alarm that generated unnecessary concern among members of the public.
After the alarm generated uproar, the command began verification and investigation which been established that no kidnapping incident occurred at the school as the report was entirely false and was deliberately disseminated to misinform the public and create unwarranted panic within the state.
Consequently and as a result of this, the command has commenced steps to apprehend the woman behind the false report for questioning and possible prosecution in the court of law.
The command said it strongly condemns the reckless spread of false information capable of undermining public confidence, causing fear among residents, and diverting attention from genuine security concerns.
“The Edo State Police Command therefore urges members of the public to exercise restraint and responsibility in their use of social media by verifying information through credible and official sources before sharing same.
“The public is further encouraged to report security-related concerns through appropriate channels to enable prompt verification and response by law enforcement agencies,” the command said in a statement on Wednesday, June 3.
