Governor of Enugu State, Dr. Peter Mbah, has vowed to immortalise late Nigerian football icon Christian Chukwu, describing him as a “national treasure” whose influence transcended sports.
Speaking at a Night of Tributes on Wednesday at the Enugu International Conference Centre, Mbah announced the retirement of Chukwu’s iconic Number 5 jersey, worn throughout his Rangers International FC career.
“As a fitting tribute to his exploits as a central defender, we will be retiring the Number 5 that Chairman Chukwu proudly wore,” he said to applause.
The governor also pledged that the state government would cater for the welfare of 109 ex-Rangers players and work with the Federal Government to ensure Chukwu’s name is permanently etched in Nigeria’s sporting history.
Mbah described Chukwu as “a unifying beacon” who embodied humility, sacrifice, and discipline. “His life teaches us that leadership is not about titles, but about the ability to inspire others,” he added.
Tributes came from family members, including his daughter, Barr. Adaora Ndibe, and his sister, Mrs. Stella Onwe, as well as from former teammates such as ex-goalkeeper Emmanuel Okala, who praised Chukwu’s leadership and humility.
Other speakers included former Governor of old Anambra State, Senator Jim Nwobodo (represented), ex-Inspector General of Police, Chief Ogbonnaya Onovo, and Rangers International FC officials.
Dignitaries present included Dame Virginia Etiaba, past and present Enugu State Executive Council members, local government chairmen, and several current and former Rangers players.
Chukwu, fondly called “Chairman,” captained both the Green Eagles (now Super Eagles) and Enugu Rangers to historic victories. He died on April 12, 2025, aged 74.
The Enugu State Government is sponsoring his burial, which began on August 10 with a Service of Songs. Events include a colloquium, a novelty match at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium on August 15, and a funeral mass on August 16 at St. Philip’s Anglican Church, Obe, followed by burial at his hometown in Nkanu West LGA.
