An online news medium, TheCable’s report, “Gambari to be unveiled as new chief of staff on Wednesday (today)” is yet to be confirmed by the Federal Government.
The Emir of Ilorin, Alhaji Sulu-Gambari, Tuesday statement signed by his media aide, Abdulazeez Arowona expressing appreciation to the President for appointing Gambari as his new chief of staff has now been denounced by a palace source.
The unconfirmed news had said President Muhammadu Buhari has appointed Professor Ibrahim Agboola Gambari as his new Chief of Staff (CoS).
Gambari, a former Minister of Foreign Affairs was to replace Abba Kyari who recently died from coronavirus complications.
Gambari, born on November 24, 1944 hails from Ilorin, Kwara state.
Gambari had served as minister of External Affairs between 1984 and 1985 during Buhari regime as military head of state. He was appointed by former United Nations Secretary Ban Ki-moon and the chairperson of the African Union Commission as Joint African Union-United Nations Special Representative for Darfur in 2010.
As foreign minister, Gambari played a key role in quelling the diplomatic uproar generated by the failed attempt to kidnap Mallam Umaru Dikko from UK by the Buhari military government.
The 75 years old Gambari is a scholar and seasoned diplomat. He served as Under-Secretary General of the United Nation for the Department of Political Affairs (DPA). At a time he also served as Adviser on the International Compact with Iraq and Other Issues for the UN Secretary General.
The appointment of Buhari’s new Chief of Staff has been generating heat in the media of recent time.
