Goalkeeper Nathaniel Harcourt was the hero as Nigeria’s Flying Eagles secured a spot in the U20 Africa Cup of Nations semifinals—and booked their ticket to the U20 FIFA World Cup—after a tense 0-0 draw and 3-1 win on penalties against Senegal.

Coach Aliyu Zubairu made two changes to the lineup that drew 2-2 with Kenya, bringing in Sulyman Olalekan Alabi and Bidemi Olalekan Amole. The reshuffled side produced their best display of the tournament in the first half, completely dominating possession and tempo against the defending champions.

Despite their slick passing and quick transitions, the Flying Eagles lacked sharpness in front of goal. Divine Oliseh and Kparobo Arierhi both missed clear chances, while Senegal rarely threatened at the other end thanks to the rock-solid defensive pairing of Daniel Bameyi and Emmanuel Cletus.

In the second half, Nigeria’s energy dipped, allowing Senegal to gain a foothold in the game. Yet neither side could find a breakthrough, and the match drifted into extra time.

Both teams created half-chances in the added 30 minutes. Nigeria’s Precious Benjamin fired over from the edge of the box, while Senegal’s Serigne Diouf went close with a header. Nigerian substitute Tahir Maigana forced a superb save from Senegalese goalkeeper Sissokho, who later denied a curling free-kick with an acrobatic tip-over.

But after 120 goalless minutes, the deadlock had to be broken from the spot.
In the shootout, Nigeria held their nerve. Harcourt made two vital saves to deny Senegal and sealed the win as Nigeria converted three of their four penalties, advancing 3-1.

The result sees the Flying Eagles not only reach the semifinals of the U20 AFCON but also secure qualification for the upcoming FIFA U20 World Cup.
