Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State has expressed shock after he found out that some medical doctors are working at various ministries that have nothing to do with health in the state.
He said he became more surprised that while the medical doctors are working at the ministries, various government hospitals in the state don’t have enough doctors, with some of them having just five doctors.
It will not be a surprise therefore in the state to see medical doctors working at the Ministry of Information or Ministry of Education or even Ministry of Water Resources while the state hospitals lack the required manpower.
The governor expressed the shock on his verified X handle on Saturday evening at the Christmas Village, a trade fair organised by the state, as he added that he had ordered the recalled of all medical doctors working in non-health related ministries immediately to the Health Ministry.
The governor wrote: “Today at the Christmas Village, I directed the immediate recall of all medical doctors currently posted to non-medical roles across ministries. As we revamp our health sector, our doctors must be where their skills are most needed, serving our people and strengthening healthcare delivery.”
At the Village, the governor also offered a young female graduate automatic employment after he got information about her life struggles and how she had been living from hand to mouth after graduating from an institution of higher learning.
The lady, Abigail Okon, was asked by the governor to start work immediately at the state civil service after getting her letter of employment.
“I was also deeply moved by the story of a young graduate, Miss Abigail Okon. Despite a very difficult beginning in life, God preserved her. I have directed that she be offered an appointment into the state civil service, to remind every young person that where you start in life must not determine where you end.”
