Gunmen suspected to be bandits early on Saturday morning killed a member of a vigilante group while he was returning from where he went to protect residents of a community in Katsina State.
The gunmen were said to have killed the man, whose name was given as Labiru Namada, around 3:00 a.m. at Yankara, Faskari Local Government Area of the state.
He was a member of the local vigilante group who always patrols the town at night amid ongoing insecurity in many parts of the state.
A source close to the local government area told Impact Nigeria News Online on Saturday afternoon that the marauders hid at a location close to his house and on his arrival from patrol, he was shot at close range in front of his house, and he died instantly.
The source said the man had survived multiple attempts to kill him from armed groups before the early Saturday encounter that claimed his life.
The incident threw the entire community into confusion as there are fears that the bandits may return to launch fresh attacks after the killing of the man said to have played a key role in the local security efforts.
In another development, gunmen on Thursday this week abducted Lauwali Sani, the Head of Pharmacy at the General Hospital, Nasarawa, along the Gusau-Anka Road while returning from Gusau, Zamfara State, on an assignment.
As of the time of this report, the abductors are yet to contact the family or the hospital authorities regarding payment of ransom for his release.
