Super Eagles defender Igoh Ogbu has explained his surprise decision to extend his contract with Slavia Prague, despite interest from top European clubs.

Ogbu, 25, has been a key player for Slavia over the past three seasons, helping the club win the Czech Liga and Czech Cup. His performances also earned him a call-up to the Nigerian national team.

In recent months, clubs like Besiktas, Fenerbahce, and Lyon were reportedly monitoring him. However, instead of pursuing a move, the center-back opted to sign a new deal that will keep him at Slavia Prague until 2027.

Speaking to Footy Africa, Ogbu said the decision was driven by his belief in the club’s vision and the opportunity to play UEFA Champions League football. “For me, extending my contract is a good decision,” he said. “I understand the system and philosophy here. I will also be able to play in the Champions League, which is something I’ve always wanted. That’s why I decided to stay for a while before making the next step.”

While fans were surprised by his choice, the move is seen as strategic. By staying at a club where he is already established, Ogbu hopes to further develop and attract better offers in the future.

He is currently valued at €11 million on Transfermarkt, but that figure could rise if he continues to perform well in the upcoming season, particularly in European competitions.
