Comfort Emmanson, the air passenger whose clash with Ibom Air crew spiralled into a viral scandal, has spoken publicly for the first time about the incident that led to her arrest, arraignment, and eventual discharge by a Lagos court.
In a video posted on her Instagram page on Sunday, Emmanson described the encounter as humiliating and traumatic, thanking her supporters for standing by her during what she called the most difficult period of her life.
The incident occurred on August 10, 2025, aboard an Ibom Air flight from Uyo to Lagos. According to Emmanson, who identifies herself as a real estate consultant, the trouble began shortly after boarding when a flight attendant, identified only as Juliana, insisted she switch off her mobile phones rather than place them in flight mode.
“I told her one of the phones had a faulty power button and could not be switched off manually. She insisted I could still shut it down through the settings. With the help of another passenger, I eventually switched off both phones,” Emmanson recalled.
She said the matter appeared resolved until the flight landed in Lagos. At that point, she briefly excused herself to use the restroom. On returning, most passengers had already disembarked. As she rushed to leave, Emmanson alleged that Juliana suddenly blocked her path.
“She didn’t say anything to me. She just gave me a bad stare. I asked why she was stopping me, but she ignored me. I pulled out my phone and started recording. That was when she shoved me back inside the plane and grabbed my wig. She tore my clothes, broke my necklace, and left me in pain,” she claimed.
What followed, according to her account, was even more humiliating. In the struggle, her clothing was ripped apart, leaving parts of her body exposed. Security officers were called in, and videos later surfaced online showing her being dragged out of the aircraft in disarray.
“They tore my clothes, exposed my body, and still filmed me. I was shocked when I saw the videos circulating online. People even turned the images into memes and stickers. The shame is unbearable. I cannot walk freely anymore without remembering that my body is out there on the internet,” she said, holding back tears.
Emmanson maintained that she never provoked the crew member, stressing that her reaction came only after she had been assaulted.
“God knows I would never poke or insult an elderly woman old enough to be my mother. It was the pain and humiliation of being dragged and stripped in public that made me react,” she insisted.
The confrontation drew widespread attention after footage of the altercation circulated on social media, prompting debates over airline passenger rights and staff conduct. The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority later intervened, while Emmanson was arraigned in Lagos before eventually being discharged by the court.
For Emmanson, however, the scars of the incident linger. “The trauma is too much. I feel humiliated every day,” she said, adding that she now struggles with the fear of going out in public.
