The Lagos State government on Saturday, March 14, reintroduced the monthly environmental sanitation exercise which will begin from last Saturday in April.
The state government disclosed that with effect from April 25, the exercise will hold at last Saturday of every month and will be held from 6:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m.
The exercise was suspended in November 2016 following a court ruling that said restriction of movement during the exercise was illegal and against citizens’ rights.
The exercise, which was initially introduced to promote cleanliness and public health, was eventually halted due to enforcement difficulties and concerns over citizens’ freedom of movement.
However, announced the reintroduction on Saturday, March 14, the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources in the state, Tokunbo Wahab, said during this period, residents are enjoined to clean their surroundings, clear drainage channels in their frontages, and dispose of waste properly as a civic responsibility.
He wrote: “I am pleased to inform all Lagosians that the monthly environmental sanitation exercise will resume effective Saturday, 25th April 2026, holding on the last Saturday of every month from 6:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m.
“During this period, residents are enjoined to clean their surroundings, clear drainage channels in their frontages, and dispose of waste properly as a civic responsibility.
“This exercise is a collective responsibility and a vital part of our commitment to a cleaner, healthier, and flood-resilient Lagos. And it shall be backed with the full enforcement weight of the Lagos State Government.”
