A man who was said to have left for work two days ago and who was arrested alongside four others over a case of theft in his work place was detained by men of the Area B Police Command, Apapa, over his inability to pay the N100,000 bail allegedly demanded by the police.

An advocacy group, the Tech4Justice, disclosed the matter on its X handle on Thursday evening, saying the man, simply known as Mr Richard, was detained while his other colleagues were set free after they reportedly paid for their bail.

According to the group, the police were invited to the company where Richard works over a case of theft and conspiracy and despite telling the officers that he knew nothing about the theft, he was arrested with four other workers.

However, while others were able to secure their freedom with the payment for bail requested by the police, Richard was unable to pay and he was thus put in detention.

His plight got to the attention of the advocacy group when one of the man’s family members informed them about his situation at the police station.

The group wrote: “On reaching the station after his family reached out, Mr Richard told our legal team that he was arrested alongside four other staff members of the company where he worked after an allegation of theft and conspiracy was made, but while the other four staff members were released after paying said ‘bail money’, he remained in detention as he could not afford to pay the money.”

However, a lawyer from the advocacy group demanded for the man’s release after it was established that he knew nothing about the theft in his office. He was eventually released to the lawyer “without any payment.”
