The Lagos State Government has successfully relocated the Okobaba Plank Market from Ebute Meta to a new site in Agbowa, known as Timberville. As part of the resettlement, 260 two-bedroom flats have been provided for affected traders to ease their transition and improve living standards.
The announcement was made by Dr. Olajide Babatunde, Special Adviser to the Governor on e-GIS and Urban Development, during the 2025 Ministerial Press Briefing in Alausa, Ikeja. He said the initiative reflects the government’s commitment to inclusive urban development and better infrastructure for trading communities.
Babatunde also revealed that 21 major markets across Lagos, including Computer Village, Abule Egba, Katangowa, and Jankara, are undergoing relocation or redevelopment under the supervision of the Lagos State Urban Renewal Agency (LASURA). The aim, he said, is to create safer, more accessible, and better-organized markets.
In addition, efforts to curb building collapses are being intensified. The Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) certified 140 professionals last year, uncovered over 8,600 building violations, and issued more than 1,100 construction permits.
Plans are also underway to redevelop the Ipodo slum in Ikeja using a human-centered, sustainable approach. To further promote eco-friendly development, the government has introduced a 30% rebate for builders of Green Eco-houses.
These moves are part of Lagos State’s broader strategy to modernize its urban landscape while prioritizing safety, sustainability, and community well-being.
