The Lakurawa terrorist group on Wednesday night unleashed terror at a community in Kebbi State, killing many residents, injuring others while also abducting a number of them.
The terrorists unleashed the terror at Dadin-Kowa community in Maiyama Local Government Area of the state when the residents were observing the Taraweeh prayers after breaking their Ramadan fast.
Taraweeh is a special voluntary night prayer performed by Muslims exclusively during the month of Ramadan after Isha prayer and it is a communal worship aimed at spiritual reflection and recitation of the Quran.
A source close to the local government told Impact Nigeria News Online on Thursday morning that the Lakurawa terrorists, armed to the teeth, arrived at the community on motorcycles, shooting at everything on sight.
During the sporadic shooting, the source said many residents were killed in the confusion that followed while others sustained varying degrees of injuries, just as some of the residents of the community were abducted and taken into the forest.
The mosque where the Taraweeh prayer was conducted was also said to have been vandalised by the terrorists before setting it ablaze.
Residents who escaped during the attack told the source that they were surprised that the terrorists could carry out the attack because they thought there would be a ceasefire by them during the holy month of Ramadan.
They also said they made distress calls to security agencies a few weeks when they got a hint of a planned attack on the community but alleged that security men did not respond to the calls.
The Northern part of the country, especially the North-West, has been in the grips of bandits and terrorists who unleash mayhem on residents almost unchallenged, killing them and abducting others for ransom.
As of the time of this report, neither the Kebbi State government nor any of the security agencies in the state has responded to the attack.
