A man on Tuesday, February 24, wrote what he described as ‘open letter’ to the Oyo State governor, Seyi Makinde, asking him to approve one week as midterm break for students in primary and secondary schools in the state.

Students in the state have always embarked on two-day midterm break usually on Thursday and Friday in the seventh week of a term that comprises 13 weeks.

However, the man, whose name is Fisayo Olanrewaju, disclosed in his X handle that he wrote the letter on behalf of “concerned citizens and stakeholders of Oyo State,” saying the two days given to students as midterm break are not enough.

He also added that Lagos State government had implemented the one-week midterm break for some time and it is yielding good results.

According to him, the two-day break is not sufficient for families that are separated by distance, adding that many spouses live in other states, and the short break doesn’t allow them to visit and spend quality time together.

Apart from this, he said in many schools, teachers are overworked and they need time to rest and recharge, as he also stated that students also need a longer break to rest and refocus.

“We kindly request you consider extending the midterm break to one week. This will boost family bonding, teachers productivity and student performance,” he wrote.
