The Sokoto State Police Command, on Friday, September 11, confirmed the killing of a man by a mob after he stabbed a prominent Islamic cleric, Sheik Musa Lukuwa, after he led a prayer at a mosque in Sokoto metropolis.
ASP Rufa’i Ahmad, the command’s Public Relations Officer, disclosed in a statement that the man was killed by the mob after he stabbed Lukuwa in the stomach immediately after Friday prayers for what he described as ‘blasphemy ‘
He said Lukuwa is currently receiving treatment at the Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital (UDUTH).
It was gathered that Lukuwa was accused of making ‘blasphemous statements’ against Prophet Muhammad, a development that triggered anger among Muslim faithful, including the attacker.
A notorious Sokoto-based gangster, Dahiru Maibarewa, had earlier pledged to kill Lukuwa over utterances he had allegedly said against the prophet in the past.
The pledge sparked demonstrations in Sokoto metropolis after Maibarewa’s arrest.
