Two mortuary attendants were rescued by men of the Edo State Police Command from being lynched to death after a family that came to take a corpse for burial discovered that some body parts had gone missing.
The state police command has also arrested the attendants who are currently giving useful information concerning the missing body parts.
According to reports, the incident occurred at Akungbe Mortuary along the Upper Sakponba Road, Benin City, the state capital, on December 12.
It was gathered that one Marvelous Odey and other family members came to the mortuary to collect the corpse of their loved one, Uyi Enogieru, for burial. However, when they checked the corpse, they found out that some body parts had gone missing.
They were said to have raised the alarm that attracted a crowd which later formed an angry mob and they were in the process of lynching the attendants to death when the police received a distress call. They raced to the mortuary and rescued the attendants.
According to the state police command in a statement on Tuesday afternoon, after rescuing the attendants, they were taken into custody for interrogation while the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for more investigation to unravel the circumstances surrounding the incident.
“The Edo State Police Command assures members of the public that no stone will be left unturned in uncovering the truth and ensuring that anyone found culpable is brought to justice in accordance with the law. Members of the public are urged to remain calm and refrain from taking the law into their own hands, while allowing the police to carry out a comprehensive investigation,” the command said.
