The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) on Monday, September 14, disclosed that it has uncovered circulation of a fake toothpaste inside a popular market in Lagos State.
NAFDAC said on its X handle that it discovered the fake toothpaste, known as ORACIRE+ Toothpaste, being distributed inside Ojuwoye Market, Mushin, under the guise of the registered ORACARE+ Toothpaste.
According to the agency, the discovery followed complaints by some residents of the state and a market intelligence report regarding the widespread distribution of the counterfeit product.
“Market surveillance conducted at Ojuwoye Market, Mushin, revealed that the product closely resembles the registered ORACARE+ Toothpaste in packaging, design and overall presentation, making it difficult for consumers to distinguish between the two products,” NAFDAC said.
It added that the toothpaste didn’t meet established quality and safety standards and could pose health risks to consumers.
“The origin, composition, safety and quality of the counterfeit product have not been verified,” NAFDAC stated.
The agency also said that it has initiated surveillance activities regarding the toothpaste and all zonal directors and state coordinators have been instructed to investigate the availability and distribution of the product and take appropriate regulatory action.
“Consumers and healthcare providers are advised to report any suspicion of the sale of suspected counterfeit ORACIRE+ Toothpaste to the nearest NAFDAC office,” NAFDAC added.
