Three Nigerian television stations have been fined by the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) for airing the #EndSARS protests and the violence that followed in parts of the country.
The NBC acting Director-General, Prof Armstrong Idachaba, at a press conference in Abuja on Monday, named Channels Television, Africa Independent Television (AIT) and Arise News as the stations fined N3million each for breached of the broadcasting code.
Idachaba noted that the broadcast stations’ “unprofessional coverage” of the #EndSARS protests and violation of the broadcasting code is the reason why they are being fined adding that the stations were guilty of airing unverified images of the Lekki shooting.
Recall that during the peaceful protest and after the protest had been hijacked by some hoodlums, these broadcast stations were keen to updating Nigerians about ongoing events in various parts of the country.
In Lagos, the protesters gathered at the Lekki Toll Gate and at the Government Secretariat in Alaua, Ikeja to call for the dissolution of SARS and an end to police brutality.
While Nigerians in diaspora were not left out as they gathered at the Nigerian Embassy in France as well as some streets of London.
