A Nigerian nurse working in Manchester, United Kingdom, has lamented her situation, saying though she earns £4,200 monthly as a nurse, sometimes at the end of the month after expenses, she ends up with just £32 left with her.

The nurse who gave her name simply as Ebun, disclosed on her verified X handle on Tuesday evening that apart from her huge expenses and deductions, she was always under pressure from her relations in Nigeria and she sends up to £800 almost on a monthly basis.

According to her, some of her expenses include rent (£1,200), council tax (£180), car finance (£340), insurance (£160), utilities (£300), food (£600+) and supporting family members in Nigeria which she said is nearly £800 monthly.

She wrote: “I am a nurse in Manchester earning about £4,200 monthly before taxes.

“People think I am wealthy because I live in UK, but after deductions, I take home around £2,900.

“Expenses include rent (£1,200), council tax (£180), car finance (£340), insurance (£160), utilities (£300), food (£600+) and supporting family in Nigeria.

“I send nearly £800 monthly, but no one asks if I can afford it.

“Last month, I had only £32 left and borrowed money. I feel ashamed because I appear successful but feel overwhelmed.”

Her post elicited some reactions from Nigerians some of who warned her regarding the £800 she sends to family members home.

Oyindamola @MOyindamol54953 wrote: “Sending home £800 and leaving you with £32 is recklessness. If you die in that country they will still live and move on. Use your sense before they use it for you.”

Ikemileyi @ladycarpenter01: “Reduce the funds you send home, you don’t need to do more than you can afford.

Echewa wrote: “If you are sending 800 pounds to family members in Nigeria monthly, then you just don’t care about yourself truly. Family is important, but if you die today, that same family in Nigeria will be just fine.”

@themainman wrote: “Stop sending £800 monthly to start with. You are the golden goose. Don’t destroy yourself sending money you can’t afford, build yourself up and when you get in a better position, you will be better placed to support others.”

Tolulope Olayemi: “Send nearly £800 monthly to who? Don’t be shocked they will lavish your money and won’t care about you, Invest in yourself and stop paying awoof insurance you might never need… Save for the future.”
