The Obidient Movement has thrown its weight behind the Nigeria Labour Congress in its push for an upward review of the national minimum wage, urging the Federal Government to act swiftly to ease the burden of rising inflation on workers. This statement highlights the significant NLC Demand for Higher Minimum Wage.
In a Workers’ Day message issued in Abuja, the National Coordinator of the movement, Yunusa Tanko, described Nigerian workers as “the real heroes of the economy” and called for policies that reflect their contributions, echoing the NLC Demand for Higher Minimum Wage.
Tanko noted that the current minimum wage of ₦70,000, approved in 2024, has been overtaken by economic realities, backing the NLC’s proposal for an increase to ₦154,000, which supports the NLC Demand for Higher Minimum Wage.
“I strongly urge the Federal Government, led by Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to implement the proposal from the NLC, so that Nigerian workers can navigate the depleting economic condition and afford necessities,” he said.
He argued that despite the critical role of the labour force, government policies have not created a supportive environment for productivity and growth. Citing labour statistics, Tanko said over 116 million Nigerians are of working age, yet many face economic hardship due to rising costs and limited opportunities.
The Obidient leader also expressed concern over increasing unemployment and business closures, which he attributed to unfavourable economic policies. According to him, job losses and declining business activity have destabilised households and reduced income security.
He further warned about Nigeria’s rising debt profile, saying the growing allocation to debt servicing poses risks to long-term economic stability. Nonetheless, the NLC Demand for Higher Minimum Wage remains a leading issue for workers.
Tanko called for broader welfare measures beyond wage increases, including improved working conditions, enhanced security, tax relief, healthcare benefits, and housing support for workers.
“The government should ensure a conducive working environment in both public and private sectors,” he said, adding that workers deserve policies that reflect their sacrifices and contributions to national development.
The NLC, led by Joe Ajaero, has consistently argued for a “living wage,” stressing that inflation has eroded the value of earnings and reduced purchasing power.
Despite the challenges, Tanko expressed optimism that with the right policies and leadership, Nigeria can achieve economic stability and improved living standards for its workforce.
