One passenger was confirmed dead while five others sustained life-threatening injuries in Lagos State on Sunday, November 16, when the driver of a commercial bus lost control as a result of brake failure and rammed into a stationary tipper.
The accident occurred in the early hours of Sunday around Majidun, inward Ogolonto, directly opposite MRS Filling Station and it involved a popular yellow commercial bus and a stationary tipper.
It was gathered that the commercial bus, chartered by the passengers to convey them to an event in Ogijo, experienced a brake failure, as the driver consequently lost control and rammed into the tipper that was on the roadside for diesel purchase.
The accident was announced by the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) in a statement, and it added that the impact resulted in the immediate death of an adult female passenger, while five female occupants and one male sustained severe and life-threatening injuries.
“While all the five injured persons were rushed to nearby Benic Special Hospital, the remains of the deceased were immediately transferred into the custody of security personnel who conveyed them to the General Hospital, Ikorodu, for urgent formal documentation,” LASTMA disclosed.
It was also gathered that when the accident occurred, the driver of the tipper attempted to abscond after seeing the enormity of the tragedy but he was pursued and apprehended by LASTMA operatives. The driver of the commercial bus was equally arrested.
Both of them were handed over to policemen from the Ipakodo Divisional Headquarters of the Lagos State Police Command.
The accident caused gridlock on the ever-busy Ikorodu end of the Lagos-Ikorodu highway but after some time, the operatives were able to remove the vehicles in order to ensure better flow of traffic.
