Some bandits who were said to have attacked a community in Zamfara State and abducted 40 residents have told them to pay the sum of N30 million within four days or get attacked again if the deadline is not met.
The bandits reportedly told Kurar Mota town in Bungudu Local Government Area of Zamfara State on Thursday morning that they should pack the money inside sacks and deliver to them in the forest.
A reliable source close to the community told Impact Nigeria News Online on Friday morning that those living in the community, which has been under constant bandits attacks, are currently in dilemma on how to raise such a huge amount of money within the stipulated period.
It was gathered that when the group of bandits first attacked the community, they looted many houses, carted away money, food and other items, set some of the houses ablaze and took away 40 residents.
Those remaining in the community were shocked when, on Thursday morning, they received the information that the bandits had contacted their leaders, demanding that the levy be paid within four days. The deadline expires on Monday morning.
However, as of the time of this report, both the state government and various security agencies have not responded to the cries of the community as the source said some of their leaders had made calls to the security agencies over the levy but alleged that they didn’t get any response.
The Northern part of the country, especially the North-West, has been under intense and sustained attacks by bandits who invade homes, loot them, abduct residents and thereafter demand for ransom.
Some of the bandits also impose levies on communities or hold ‘peace deal’ with some of them, promising that they will enjoy peace if certain amount is made available for them.
