Presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 election, Peter Obi, has confirmed he will run again in the 2027 presidential race. During a live session on X Spaces Sunday night, Obi announced his intention to contest and pledged to serve only a single four-year term if elected.
In a statement released Monday by his spokesperson, Ibrahim Umar of the Peter Obi Media Reach, Obi dismissed speculation of a possible alliance with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar. However, he expressed openness to coalition talks, provided they address Nigeria’s pressing issues.
“If the coalition is not about stopping the killings in Benue, Zamfara, how to revive our economy, how to make our industries productive, how to put food on the tables of Nigerians… Count me out,” he stated.
Obi promised to bring stability to Nigeria within his first two years in office and outlined security, education, and poverty reduction as his top priorities for the first 100 days. He assured supporters that his campaign would adopt a peaceful and transparent approach in 2027. “Our votes in 2027 will count, and we will ensure they count,” he said.
On the crisis in the Labour Party, Obi noted ongoing efforts to secure Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) recognition for the Nenadi Usman-led faction. He reiterated his belief in rotational leadership and criticised President Bola Tinubu’s extended stay in St. Lucia amidst domestic crises.
“My family will not be involved in corruption,” he pledged, adding, “Leaders must lead by example.”
