Men of the Delta State Police Command have foiled a plot to abduct a pastor who is also a retired principal at a community in the state just as the prime suspect, a security guard, has been arrested in connection with the incident.
It was gathered that on July 31, operatives of ‘A’ Divisional Headquarters in Ughelli, while acting on credible intelligence,, foiled the planned kidnapping.
The operatives received information that the security guard, whose name was given as Jeremiah Kwane, aged 26 years, had attempted to recruit an individual into a kidnapping syndicate with a view to abducting the pastor in the town.
The intelligence was immediately acted upon, leading to the arrest of the guard at his duty post while a search conducted during the operation led to the recovery of one single-barrelled gun and two live cartridges.
He was said to have given more useful information to the police operatives while the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for more investigation.
He will be charged to court at the conclusion of the investigation.
In another development, operatives of the Ebrumede Divisional Headquarters, while on intensive stop-and-search duty along Garki-Uti Road, Effurun, on Tuesday, August 4, intercepted three armed robbers.
During the operation, Benjamin Haruna (aged 28 years) was arrested, while two others escaped on their getaway motorcycle.
A search of a bag in the possession of Haruna led to the recovery of two locally made double-barrelled guns, eleven live cartridges, one expended cartridge, one axe, two Android phones, two power banks, two wristwatches, one lighter, and one camouflage military polo.
Preliminary investigation revealed that he and the other fleeing robbers were transporting the exhibits to their hideout along Sapele Road.
