Men of the Oyo State Police Command on Saturday rescued a man from being lynched to death by a mob after he killed a six-year-old girl and cut off her head for ritual purpose.
The command announced the development in a statement on Sunday, April 11, saying the man, Sodiq Kayode Akorede, aged 23 years, was involved in the dastardly act at Adigun Village, Olorunda Ogunsola area of Ibadan, the state capital.
According to reports, Akorede lured the girl into a secret place, killed her and severed her head. However, while leaving with the head, he was accosted by some residents of the area who, on seeing the head, raised the alarm.
Within minutes, a mob had been formed and they descended on him, attempting to lynch him to death.
However, a call was made to the command, which made police officers to race to the scene where he was found to have been beaten blue black.
Though the police initially faced resistance from the mob, he was eventually rescued and he reportedly confessed to the crime. He had been taken to a medical facility for treatment following the injuries sustained from the mob attack.
After his discharge, he is expected to be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for more investigation and he will be charged to court at the conclusion of the investigation.
