An armed robber who held his female victim hostage, asked her to call her husband for payment of N5 million ransom has been arrested by men of the Ondo State Police Command when he was about to withdraw N1 million paid by the man.
The state police command announced the development in a statement on Tuesday, December 9, saying the robber, Godspower Cletus, carried out the act at Odudu community in Akure, the state capital.
According to the command, the robber invaded the residence of the woman (names withheld) where he was said to have robbed her of her phone and ATM card while armed with a pistol .
Apparently not satisfied with what he got, he threatened the woman and compelled her to call her husband, who was working and living in another state, demanding a ransom of N5 million.
The worried husband reportedly transferred N1 million to the victim’s account and on receiving the alert for the payment, he fled from the house, believing he had successfully carried out his criminal plan.
However, the matter was reported and through diligent intelligence gathering, detectives of the command’s Anti-Kidnapping Squad were able to track him and he was arrested at a Point of Sales outlet while attempting to withdraw the money.
The command wrote: “Upon interrogation, the suspect voluntarily confessed to the crime and investigations are ongoing to determine if he has accomplices or links to similar criminal activities within the state.”
He is expected to be charged to court at the conclusion of the investigation into his nefarious activities.
