Former Senate President Bukola Saraki has pledged to help reposition the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and resolve its ongoing leadership crisis.
Speaking with journalists in Ilorin, Kwara State, on Wednesday, Saraki acknowledged the possibility of more PDP members defecting to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), even as he expressed hope that some politicians from other parties might join the PDP.
Saraki, who now chairs the PDP’s newly constituted reconciliation committee, admitted the party has been grappling with internal conflicts since the build-up to the 2023 general elections. These include unresolved rifts with the G-5 governors and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, who opposed the presidential bid of Atiku Abubakar. Additionally, the party is facing a fresh dispute over the National Secretary position.
Despite these challenges, Saraki insisted the PDP remains Nigeria’s most viable opposition platform. “Yes, there are challenges, and I have taken it upon myself to do my best,” he said. “I am seeing positive responses from our colleagues who are ready to settle our differences.”
He urged PDP members to remain hopeful and supportive as efforts to restore party unity continue. “We are committed to rescuing the party and repositioning it to provide a credible alternative for Nigerians,” Saraki added.
He stressed the importance of internal reconciliation and said the committee has been meeting with key stakeholders nationwide. “We want to reassure our members that we are doing everything possible to rebuild trust and cohesion. The PDP has a strong legacy, and we will work hard to ensure it remains relevant,” he said.
Saraki’s renewed efforts come as the PDP prepares to solidify its base and chart a clearer path forward ahead of future elections.
