Showdown seems to be looming over plans by various communities in Anambra State to conduct what they described as “town union elections” across the state during the festive period.
In fact, there are reports that various groups are spoiling for total war over the elections which sources said they don’t take lightly.
According to the sources, elections into various town unions across the state are always held before the end of each year, especially after December 25 due to the fact that persons from the state who live and work in other parts of the country used to be at their various towns for the festivities.
The tension and threats of violence that the elections may generate have even got to the attention of the state police command who issued a statement on Saturday, December 27, regarding the elections.
The command has therefore issued what it described as “a security advisory” to communities across the state, warning mischief makers, trouble makers and individuals with criminal intentions to stay away from all election venues and desist from acts capable of causing tension, violence or breakdown of law and order.
The command urged community members, candidates, supporters and all interested parties to exercise restraint, respect constituted authorities and refrain from taking the law into their hands before, during and after the elections.
It added that disputes or grievances arising from the process should be channeled through lawful and established mechanisms.
“The command recognises that town union elections are vital community activities that contribute to grassroots leadership and development. However, it emphasises that such exercises must be conducted peacefully, orderly and strictly in line with existing laws, guidelines and decisions of constituted authorities,” it added..
The police command in the state said in order to ensure the safety of lives and property, it will deploy adequate personnel and resources to strategic locations across the communities.
“Any person or group found engaging in violence, intimidation, unlawful assembly, or other criminal activities will be arrested and dealt with in accordance with the law,” the command stated.
