Men of the Nigerian Army have rescued four kidnapped Nigerians in the Bakassi waterways while they were being taken to Republic of Cameroon.
Troops of the 13 Brigade rescued the citizens during what was described as “well-coordinated and decisive waterborne operation” in Bakassi, Cross River State, on Tuesday, December 2.
It was gathered that the troops, while on a routine patrol along key waterways, intercepted a group of armed men who were ferrying four abducted civilians in a speedboat towards Isangele in the Republic of Cameroon.
However, upon sighting the soldiers, the criminals reportedly opened fire in an attempt to evade arrest. The troops engaged them with a superior firepower, forcing them to abandon the victims and flee into the surrounding creeks.
The soldiers thereafter rescued the four abducted victims and they had been taken to the hospital for medical care.
The Nigerian Army added in a statement that efforts are being intensified to arrest the fleeing criminals.
