A thief who posed as a mechanic at the popular Agodi Gate area of Ibadan, Oyo State and who collected a Toyota Camry from a customer for repairs has been arrested after he disappeared with the car and the vehicle was found in Ilesha, Osun State.

The mechanic, whose name was given as Babtunde Awopetu, was arrested by the operatives attached to the Monitoring unit of the command following a complaint lodged by the owner of the car.

It was gathered that the owner of the car, whose name was given simply as Ganiyu, from Ogun State came to buy an unregistered but used Toyota Camry in Ibadan and after the deal, he sought repairs before returning to Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital.

According to a statement by Adewale Osifeso, the Public Relations Officer of the command on Saturday, Ganiyu met Awopetu at Agodi Gate, who took the car for repairs, only to disappear with it.

The command wrote: “Ganiyu, unable to locate him, reported the theft to the police team on Operation Restore Peace, who escalated the matter to the Command Monitoring Unit.

“Thanks to a swift undercover investigation, detectives tracked Awopetu to a hideout in Ibadan and arrested him. The stolen Toyota Camry was found in Ilesa, Osun State. Awopety confessed during questioning, and the investigation continues.”
