Authorities of the University of Ibadan (UI) on Saturday, May 9, gave reasons for not allowing a bus belonging to the Students Union of the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) into the campus of the institution.

There was a commotion at the entry gate of the university on Friday when the driver of the bus was stopped by security personnel of the university from going inside the campus.

The occupants of the bus, who were apparently students coming to solidarise with students of UI who held a protest inside campus, were said to have insisted on going inside the campus, while the security personnel demanded they identified themselves.

The security personnel were said to have told the occupants of the vehicle that if they were invited into the campus, the Students Union of UI or the school authorities would have informed them, adding that they didn’t get any information about their coming and so, they would not be allowed entry.

One of the occupants of the bus posted the incident on social media and this generated mixed reactions with some condemning the act while others defended the university.

However, reacting to the incident on Saturday, the authorities of UI said for security reasons, the institution enforces strict protocols on visitor buses from other institutions.

It said: “For security reasons, UI enforces strict protocols on visitor buses from other institutions. Our team reports that the occupants refused to properly identify themselves or state their purpose.

“Creating a scene and entry was denied. Visiting groups should always follow procedures.”
