A 13-year-old boy has killed himself at a community in Bauchi State after he pulled the trigger of a loaded gun left by a hunter inside his room.
The hunter has however been arrested and he is currently assisting men of the state police command in their investigations.
It was gathered that the incident occurred on Saturday, September 5, in the evening and the police received a report regarding the matter around 9:00 p.m. from a 50-year-old man at Udubo village.
The report indicated that on the same date around 4:40 p.m., one Suleiman Hamza, a 35-years-old man, of the same village, returned from hunting and left his loaded Dane gun inside his room before going out.
Thereafter, the boy, Mubarak Mohammed, aged 13 years, said to be the son of a neighbour, entered the man’s room and pulled the trigger, causing the gun to discharge and inflict fatal injuries on him.
Upon receipt of the report, a team of detectives attached to Gamawa Divisional Headquarters mobilised to the scene and rushed the boy to the General Hospital, Gamawa, where the medical doctor on duty confirmed him dead.
“Photographs were taken and the remains were released to relatives for burial according to Islamic rites. The suspect has been arrested, preliminary investigation was concluded, and the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for more investigation.
“The Commissioner of Police, cautioned hunters and other firearm owners to handle weapons with utmost care and keep them out of the reach of children to prevent avoidable loss of life,” the command said in a statement on Sunday, September 6.
