Cristiano Ronaldo’s dream of ending his illustrious FIFA World Cup career with the coveted trophy came to a heartbreaking end after Portugal suffered a 1-0 defeat to Spain in the Round of 16 at Dallas Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
The 41-year-old Portugal captain played the full match but was unable to inspire his side to victory as Spain booked their place in the quarter-finals with a dramatic stoppage-time winner from Mikel Merino. Following the final whistle, an emotional Ronaldo waved to Portugal supporters before leaving the pitch with tears in his eyes, marking the end of his World Cup journey.
Ahead of the match, Ronaldo had acknowledged that the 2026 tournament would be his final appearance on football’s biggest stage.
“I’m trying to enjoy the fact that this is my last World Cup as much as possible,” he told reporters. “I hope tomorrow won’t be my final match.”
