The Gombe State University on Monday, January 19, confirmed an attack on a final-year student of the university inside one of the female hostels of the institution by someone described as an ‘intruder.’

The female student was said to be in the hostel preparing for the defence of her project when the intruder entered the female hostel. Students were said to be on break when the incident occurred.

The unnamed female student was said to be alone in one of the rooms in the hostel when the intruder came in and, according to the university authorities, while attempting to defend herself from the attack, she was inflicted with a machete cut on her hand.

The alarm raised by her got the attention of the security guards at the hostel who called other security men in the university and they raced to the scene, but the attacker had fled before their arrival.

The security men took her to the university’s clinic where she received medical attention and was said to be in stable condition.

The statement on the incident, issued by H.N. Ligari, the Public Relations Officer of the institution reads in part: “University security responded to the situation, and immediate action was taken to ensure the safety of the student and others. The university management, including the Vice-Chancellor, visited the site to assess the situation firsthand.”
