A man who was arrested by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for posing as a lawyer has disclosed that though he obtained a law degree from the university through evening classes, he didn’t attend the Nigerian Law School.
Only graduates of Law who attend the Nigerian Law School and pass the bar final examinations are statutorily permitted to practice Law in the country after they are formally called to the Bar.
However, the man, whose name was given as John Anoruo, aged 55 years, when interrogated after his arrest, said he graduated from the University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN) in 2018 at the institution’s Faculty of Law but he didn’t attend the Law School.
He was arrested by the operatives of the Lagos Zonal Directorate 2 of the commission not only for posing as a lawyer, but also for possession of a forged seal of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA).
Anoruo, who was found to be operating a legal and educational consultancy in the Ikorodu area of Lagos State, landed in trouble when he visited the EFCC office.
His case began after he submitted a petition to the EFCC, on behalf of his clients, against the management of a company in the state.
However, investigations revealed that both the petition and the subsequent Letter of Withdrawal dated March 5, 2026, bore a forged seal of the NBA which Anoruo confessed to have obtained from an undisclosed business centre in Lagos.
“During investigations, the 55-year-old claimed that although he obtained a Law degree in 2018 from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Enugu State, through evening classes, he did not attend the Nigerian Law School,” the EFCC said in a statement on Tuesday, April 21.
He is expected to be charged to court as soon as investigations are concluded.
