A lady was on Tuesday, September 8, found dead inside a room at a hotel in Calabar, Cross River State, with marks of violence on her body while her male companion was nowhere to be found.
The Cross River State Police Command has commenced investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of the unidentified female guest at the hotel (names withheld) situated along Clifford Street, Calabar.
The incident was reported to the police on Tuesday morning by the director of the hotel, accompanied by the manager and the receptionist on duty.
Investigation by the police indicated that on September 7 around 8:00 a.m., a man lodged in one of the rooms of the hotel with a female companion whose identity is yet to be established and the male guest was allegedly not properly documented at the reception.
However, in the early hours of Tuesday, the receptionist reportedly observed that the door to the room was open and, believing that the occupants had checked out, entered to switch off the ceiling fan. Upon switching on the light, he discovered the female guest lying motionless in the bed. This made him to raise the alarm.
Police operatives who visited the scene were said to have observed marks of violence on the face and neck of the lady and documented the scene accordingly.
The lady was subsequently taken to the General Hospital, Calabar, where she was confirmed dead by the doctor on duty and deposited at the mortuary pending further investigation and any necessary medical or forensic examination.
According to the command, some tablets were also recovered from the deceased’s handbag and kept as exhibits while the receptionist has been taken into police custody in order to assist investigators in establishing the circumstances surrounding the admission of the guests and the events preceding the discovery of the deceased.
Meanwhile, the command has launched efforts to identify and locate the male guest who disappeared from the hotel.
