A top member of the Nigerian in UK Community (NIUK) on Monday disclosed that the number of Nigerian children being taken into social services in the United Kingdom almost every month is alarming.
The man, whose verified X handle is Oluomo of Derby, added that many of these cases happen because Nigerian parents are not aware of UK child-protection laws and what the system considers acceptable.
Many reported cases abound when the government seizes children from Nigerian parents after they are punished or spanked, as indications emerged that some of these children are not seen again by the parents.
The man disclosed that parents who have children in UK or those who are planning to move into the country with their children need to be careful as what obtained there in terms of disciplining children is different from the situation in Nigeria.
He wrote: “If you already have children in the UK, or you’re planning to move here with your children, please read the tweet well.
“The number of Nigerian children being taken into social services almost every month is alarming.
“Many of these cases happen because parents are not aware of UK child-protection laws and what the system considers acceptable.
“Please take time to understand the laws of the land. Know your rights, know the rules and know how the system works.
“The UK is very different from back home, and ignorance can lead to serious consequences.
“Equip yourself with knowledge now otherwise, you may have only yourself to blame.”
