The Yuletide season is a time when people take a break from work to relax, celebrate, and bond with family, friends, and associates.
It is often characterised by public holidays, with businesses and individuals closing for the year to strategise for the new year.
Christmas Day, marked globally on December 25, is one of the days during the Yuletide season that people look forward to, as it comes with lots of fun, festivities, and celebration for many families.
However, while many gather with loved ones to celebrate the holiday, others dedicate their time and effort to ensuring essential services run smoothly and emergencies are handled effectively.
These professionals, including security personnel, journalists, and healthcare workers, are among the selfless individuals who sacrifice their holidays to maintain the nation’s safety and well-being because of the essential services they render.
Impact Nigerian Newspaper spotlights some of these professionals who sacrifice their Christmas Day to ensure society runs smoothly.
1. Healthcare and emergency responders
The first set of professionals who usually do not go on break on Christmas Day are doctors, nurses, paramedics, and pharmacists.
These professionals spend Christmas tending to the sick, injured, or those in need of urgent care, ensuring the health, recovery, and safety of patients even during the festive season.
2. Security and firefighting personnel
The very nature of the jobs of police officers, soldiers, private security guards, and firefighters entails that they remain vigilant during Christmas Day festivities to ensure the safety of citizens.
These sets of professionals patrol streets, manage crowds, tackle emergencies like house fires, and respond to accidents, deploying their bravery and vigilance to ensure a safe and secure environment for all on Christmas Day.
3. Media and entertainment professionals
Media and entertainment professionals like journalists, broadcasters, musicians, Disc Jockeys (DJs), and event planners work tirelessly to bring news, information, entertainment, and festive cheer to the public during Christmas Day celebrations.
They deploy their creativity and talents to ensure citizens are informed and entertained during Christmas Day celebrations.
4. Transportation and logistics workers
The Yuletide season usually means that people are moving from one location to another in larger numbers than at other times of the year, and it is the duty of bus drivers, taxi operators, train conductors, airline staff, customs officers, and ground crew to work tirelessly to keep travellers moving.
Even on Christmas Day, delivery drivers and couriers ensure gifts and essential items reach their destinations on time.
5. Religious leaders and volunteers
Christmas Day often sees members of the clergy and volunteers involved in services, charitable events, and offering meals and gifts to the less privileged in society.
Through their work, these people embody the spirit of the Yuletide season as they spread hope and foster a sense of community and generosity.
6. Utility and maintenance professionals
Ever wondered why electricity, water, and telecommunication lines remain active even on Christmas Day? There is no doubt that the efforts of essential workers ensure these utilities are provided.
The same holds for technicians maintaining roads, bridges, and sewage systems, who work behind the scenes to keep critical infrastructure operational.
These professionals ensure that homes remain lit, warm, and connected throughout the Christmas Day and Yuletide season.
7. Hospitality and retail staff
To ensure smooth Christmas Day celebrations, chefs, waiters, hotel workers, supermarket staff, shop attendants, and other hospitality workers often ditch their holiday to serve travellers, diners, and last-minute shoppers, facilitating a more convenient and luxurious celebration and keeping commerce and festivities alive on Christmas Day.
8. IT, customer care, and crisis support professionals
Like other professionals who offer essential services, IT teams work around the clock to ensure websites, online services, products, and digital infrastructure remain functional.
These professionals facilitate smooth digital product and service operations, address customer needs and concerns, provide support, and respond to crises swiftly, even on Christmas Day.
9. Sanitation and public space workers
With the anticipated spike in waste due to Christmas Day celebrations, garbage collectors and street cleaners ensure public spaces remain clean and hygienic during the holiday. Their efforts prevent dirt from taking over the environment and ensure city centres are aesthetically pleasing.
