Academic and related activities were halted at the University of Ibadan on Monday, October 13, as the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) University of Ibadan chapter complied fully the union’s nationwide warning strike.
A postgraduate student of the university, who spoke to Impact Nigeria Newspaper on the condition of anonymity, confirmed that the strike has taken effect as lecture theatres and administrative offices were locked across the campus.
The student also noted that movement of students and vehicles reduced, adding that some students seen around might also be participating in the school’s student union’s week, which commenced on Monday, October 13.
It was also confirmed that the union notified students of the strike through a circular, making some students remain indoors.
“I think the strike is effective. I went to see a lecturer this afternoon but couldn’t. I saw some students going about. You know, trade fair and student union’s week have started, so that may be why.
“There was a circular to that effect. I think the strike is actually effective. I hope it doesn’t affect the academic calendar,” the student said.
The chairman of the UI ASUU chapter, Dr Adefemi Afolabi, who confirmed the development, said the strike began at midnight on Sunday, October 12, and will continue until the national secretariat issues further instructions.
“There is full compliance with the directive from our national body. The warning strike commenced at midnight on Sunday and will continue until we receive further instructions from the union,” Afolabi disclosed.
He stated that the chapter’s monitoring team was visiting faculties and departments to ensure total compliance, stressing that “no academic or related activity is taking place on the campus at the moment.”
It would be recalled that ASUU, on Sunday, October 12, declared a two-week total and comprehensive warning strike across all public universities in Nigeria over the Federal Government’s failure to meet its demands.
The National President of ASUU, Professor Chris Piwuna, made the announcement at an ongoing press briefing at the University of Abuja.
He said, “Compatriots of the press, it goes without saying that there is nothing sufficient on the ground to stop the implementation of the ASUU-NEC’s resolution to embark on a two-week warning strike at the expiry of the 14-day notice given on the 28th September 2025.
“Consequently, all branches of ASUU are hereby directed to withdraw their services with effect from midnight on Monday, the 13th of October, 2025.
“The warning strike shall be total and comprehensive as agreed at the last NEC meeting.”
