A woman who travellled from Kaduna to Warri in order to collect 2,500 AK-47 bullets which were meant for hoodlums has been arrested on her way back by men of the Niger State Police Command with the items hidden inside a flask.
The command disclosed in a statement on Monday afternoon that the woman, Zuwaira Usman, aged 35 years, was arrested by the police operatives following intelligence reports about the movement of the ammunition received by the command.
It was gathered that during her interrogation, she stated that she met one Lawali in Birnin-Gwari, Kaduna State, around September this year where they exchanged phone numbers and in the course of their interaction, Lawali requested her to travel to Warri, Delta State and collect a package for him.
She claimed that the sum of N20,000 was given to her as transport fare by Lawali and she proceeded on the journey. On getting to Abuja, she stated that Lawali spoke with the driver and informed him where she would be dropped in Warri.
Zuwaira added that on getting to her destination, she met a man on a motorcycle who gave her a sack which contained a flask with some items to deliver to Lawali. She said that the man was later identified as Ahmed, and he gave her additional N30,000 for her transport back to Kaduna. She took the item and returned to Abuja, and from Abuja to Kaduna State.
She was flagged down while on the way to deliver the sack to Lawali in Birnin-Gwari and when the officers searched the sack, it was discovered that 2,500 AK-47 ammunition were hidden inside the flask.
It was also gathered that further investigation has led to the arrest of Ahmed in Warri while efforts are ongoing to arrest Lawali over the matter.
The woman and the man are expected to be charged to court at the conclusion of the investigation into their nefarious activities.
