The Lagos State Police Command on Thursday, December 11, returned the sum of N10 million said to have been extorted from a man by men of the command in the Lekki area of the state after he was branded as a cultist.
The command also ordered the release of the man, whose name was given simply as Chinedu and apologised to him while adding that the officers involved would be sanctioned adequately.
It was gathered that the officers on patrol stopped the man’s vehicle on the Lekki-Epe Expressway and after checking the particulars of the vehicle, they refused to allow him to go because they allegedly saw tattoos on his body.
He was said to have become angry for not allowing him to go and during an argument that ensued, he was branded as a cultist and taken to their station where he was allegedly detained and extorted of the sum of N10 million.
However, following the report of the incident posted on the social media by the man’s cousin, the police became aware of it and ordered investigation into the matter.
The police eventually found out that it was true its officers extorted the money from the man. The money was returned to him, he was asked to be released from detention and the command apologised to him.
The man confirmed that Chinedu was released on Thursday afternoon.
