A member of the National Youths Service Corps (NYSC) has given details of how some policemen in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, allegedly extorted him after demanding for the receipt of the laptop he carried.
The corps member, Hammed Lamidi, narrated the encounter on his X handle on Tuesday, saying the officers initially demanded the sum of N50,000 but he ended up paying N20,000 before he was allowed to go.
According to him, he was returning from his Place of Primary Assignment (PPA) in the afternoon when he was stopped by the officers at the Orita Aperin area of the city. He said was eventually taken to their station where the officers searched through his bag.
He added that during the search, they brought out his laptop and asked him about the receipt, but he told them he never thought of going about with the receipt of a laptop.
He stated that his answer infuriated them as they said it was possible that the laptop could have been stolen by him, and so, he was allegedly told to stay behind the counter.
He said: “I wasn’t with the receipt and they never allowed me to make any calls. After a whole lot of checking on my phone and laptop, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) asked that I pay them N50,000 because I wasn’t with the receipt of my laptop.”
He stated that after spending some time at the station over the matter, he told them that all he had in his bank account was N30,000 and on hearing this, the DPO allegedly asked him to pay N20,000.
He was eventually taken to a Point of Sales (POS) stand beside the police station where he made the payment into a lady’s Moniepoint account.
The corps member also displayed the transaction receipt of the money paid by him.
Reacting to the post, the state police command on Wednesday asked him to furnish it with more details regarding the incident through Direct Message on its X handle or through a phone number it provided.
